Pick up almost any shampoo with a plant on the front. It will name the plant. It will almost never tell you how much of it is actually in the bottle.
There is a reason for that. Botanical extracts cost far more than the water and surfactants that make up the bulk of a formulation, and a product can legally carry a herb’s name while containing a fraction of a percent of it.
So we print the number. Amla at 1.5%, bhringraj at 1.0%, shikakai at 2.0% — with the Latin binomial, on the front of the pack. It is not a heroic act. It just means our claims can be checked.
